Instructor: Jon Chi

Prerequisites: Glassblowing 2 and/or 3 (or equivalent skills)

Struggling with chunky avolios, thick cups or, off-center and mis-proportioned blown feet?
Elevate Your Cups: Blown Feet will aim to address all of these issues and more to help the detail-oriented glassblower refine their goblets. Working exclusively with clear furnace glass, the class will cover the following topics:

  • Blowing thin cups
  • Blown feet
  • Optic molds
  • Avolios

The class will take a two-pronged approach: first by providing technical demos and second by diagnosing student-specific issues. Students are encouraged to bring photos or past work to show what specific aspects of the process they are struggling with. Themes of body and hand position, partner work, timing, communication, and composure will be emphasized throughout. This class will aim to push the students’ ability to quickly and efficiently execute thin and proportional vessels. A primary goal of this class is to have students gain comfort with iterating this approach and combining the constituent parts into simple stem-ware. A critical eye and perseverance will be beneficial.
