Greg Lastrapes: Swedish Overlay Intensive
On the weekend of March 21st & 22nd, glass artist Greg Lastrapes will visit BAGI to teach his class "Swedish Overlay Intensive" in our Hotshop! Developed in Swedish glass factories in the late 19th century, the color overlay presents a unique opportunity to manipulate color on the outside of a glass piece. The precursor to the Graal and Ariel techniques, this class is dedicated to the successful mastery of the overlay itself. Participants will learn methods for manipulating the overlay while hot, as well as other foundational Swedish glassblowing techniques and aesthetics.
Students in this class should expect to reliably execute Swedish Overlays and manipulate the surface with patterns and abstract designs by the time they complete this class. Students should have experience making pieces up to four gathers, working hot, and advanced practice with the newspaper.

Greg Lastrapes is a talented glass artist whose work is rooted in the techniques and aesthetics of 20th century Swedish glass design, particularly those developed at Orrefors Glasbruk. Lastrapes finds that Swedish glassblowing techniques demand an intimate understanding of glass’s inherent qualities as a liquid and solid. Pursuing excellence with these techniques gets him to the studio each day, but he enjoys stepping outside the Swedish design context to choose the colors and images he produces in his work. Greg's most recent works include a series of air trap pieces using words and figures to process personal stress from politics, as well as refining a line of housewares.
